What Is an IP Lookup?
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is the unique numeric identifier assigned to every device connected to the internet. An IP lookup takes that address and reveals the public information attached to it: roughly where in the world it is registered, which Internet Service Provider (ISP) or organization owns it, the Autonomous System Number (ASN) it belongs to, and its timezone.
Because IP geolocation is derived from where address blocks are registered rather than from a GPS device, the reported city is usually accurate to the region or country level — and is most reliable for large providers and datacenters. The tool also flags whether an address is associated with a known VPN, proxy or TOR network, which is useful when you want to understand whether an address is likely to represent a real visitor or an anonymized one.

How accurate is IP address location?
IP geolocation is based on where a range of addresses is registered, not on a physical tracker. It is typically accurate to the country and often to the region, and it is most precise for datacenter and large-provider addresses. For consumer connections it can sometimes show a nearby city rather than your exact location — this is normal and expected behaviour.
What does it mean when an IP is flagged as VPN, proxy or TOR?
It means the address range is known to be used for anonymization services — commercial VPNs, public proxies, or the TOR network. Such addresses often originate from datacenters rather than home connections. This can indicate a visitor is deliberately hiding their true location, which is worth knowing if you are vetting traffic or an unknown address.
Can an IP lookup reveal my exact home address?
No. IP geolocation cannot pinpoint your street address. It typically identifies the country, and often a city or region associated with your ISP's address block. Geolocation data is an approximation and is not precise enough to locate a specific home. Only your ISP knows your actual billing address, and they do not share it publicly.
What is an ASN?
An Autonomous System Number (ASN) is a globally unique number that identifies a network operator on the internet, such as an ISP or a hosting company. Every public IP address belongs to some AS. Showing the ASN alongside the ISP helps you understand which organization actually owns and operates the address range.
