What Is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a long-standing protocol that answers the question "who owns this domain?" Every registered domain name has an associated record holding administrative details: the registrar through which it was registered, the date it was created, when it is due to expire, the current status, and (where not protected by privacy) the registrant's contact information. A WHOIS lookup pulls that public record for any domain so you can see this information for yourself.
This is genuinely useful in day-to-day work. Website owners use WHOIS to keep track of when their domains expire so they never lose one by accident. Security researchers and buyers use it to find the owner of an expired or abandoned domain. Businesses use it to check whether a competing brand name has been registered. In recent years many registrars hide personal details behind privacy protection, but the registrar, creation date and expiration date almost always remain visible.

What information can I see in a WHOIS lookup?
A typical result shows the domain registrar, the creation and expiration dates, the current registrar status codes, and the nameservers. When privacy protection is not enabled, it also shows the registrant's name, organization and contact details. Our tool always shows the registrar and dates, which are almost never hidden.
Why don't I see the domain owner's name and email?
Most registrars now apply WHOIS privacy protection by default, which replaces the registrant's personal details with the registrar's forwarding service. This was introduced to stop spam and abuse. Even when details are hidden, you can still see the registrar and the expiration date, and you can typically reach the owner through the registrar's contact form.
What happens if my domain expires?
After a domain expires it enters a grace period, followed by a redemption period, during which the original owner can usually still renew it — often at a higher price. If it is not renewed, it is eventually released and becomes available for anyone to register. Checking the WHOIS expiration date regularly helps you renew on time and avoid losing your domain.
Is a WHOIS lookup the same as a DNS lookup?
No. A WHOIS lookup returns registration and ownership metadata about the domain itself, such as the registrar and expiration date. A DNS lookup returns the technical records that make the domain work, such as A and MX records that point to servers. Both are useful together: WHOIS tells you who owns it, DNS tells you what it points to.
