The WHOIS Lookup tool retrieves domain registration information from public WHOIS databases. Every registered domain has WHOIS records that reveal who owns it, when it was created, and when it expires.
How to use it
Open the IPChecks homepage, click the WHOIS Lookup card, enter a domain name (without https:// or www) and press Lookup. The tool queries WHOIS sources and returns the registration details, including the registrar name, creation and expiration dates, and the name servers in use.
Real-world example
Before buying an expired or aftermarket domain, run a WHOIS Lookup to see its age and expiry. An older domain (registered years ago) often carries more search-authority and trust than a brand-new one. You can also spot domain squatters or verify that a business's stated domain actually belongs to them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the registrant's name hidden in some WHOIS results?
Many registrars offer privacy or proxy protection that replaces the owner's personal details with the registrar's contact information. This is normal and does not mean the domain is suspicious — it is a GDPR-driven privacy feature.
How accurate is the expiration date?
The expiration date comes directly from the registry and is reliable. Just remember that the owner can usually renew at any time, so a near-term expiry does not guarantee the domain will become available.
Can I look up an IP address with WHOIS?
WHOIS is mainly for domain names. For network ownership of an IP address (ISP, organization, ASN) use an IP Geolocation lookup instead.
